What to Expect at Your First Surgical Consultation

Meeting with a surgeon for the first time can feel intimidating. Many patients are unsure what the visit will involve, whether surgery will be necessary, or what questions they should ask.

At Abbassi Surgical Associates, we believe surgical care should feel informative, thoughtful, and personal — not rushed or overwhelming.

Our goal during your consultation is simple: understand your symptoms, explain your options clearly, and help you feel comfortable moving forward.

Before Your Appointment

Prior to your visit, our team may ask you to provide:

  • Imaging studies or reports
  • Referral information
  • Medication lists
  • Surgical history
  • Insurance information

If you have had CT scans, ultrasounds, or other testing performed elsewhere, bringing those records can help us better evaluate your condition.

We also recommend bringing a disc containing your imaging studies to your appointment whenever possible. Reviewing the actual images personally allows Dr. Abbassi to evaluate the findings directly, discuss them with you in detail, and provide the most informed recommendation regarding your care.

What Happens During the Consultation?

Every patient is different, but most consultations include four important parts:

1. A Detailed Conversation

We begin by listening.

You will have the opportunity to explain:

  • Your symptoms
  • How long they have been occurring
  • What makes them better or worse
  • Prior treatments or testing
  • How the issue is affecting your daily life

Many surgical conditions develop gradually, and understanding the full story is often just as important as reviewing imaging.

2. Review of Imaging and Medical Records

If you have had:

  • CT scans
  • Ultrasounds
  • MRI studies
  • Endoscopy or colonoscopy reports
  • Laboratory testing

we will review those findings together and explain them in understandable terms.

Patients are often surprised to learn that imaging findings do not always perfectly match symptoms. Surgical decision-making involves combining the imaging, examination, and overall clinical picture.

3. Physical Examination

Most surgical consultations involve a focused physical examination related to your condition.

Depending on the reason for your visit, this may include evaluation of:

  • Hernias
  • Abdominal tenderness
  • Soft tissue masses
  • Gallbladder symptoms
  • Skin or anorectal conditions

We strive to make examinations respectful, efficient, and comfortable.

4. Discussion of Treatment Options

Not every surgical consultation ends with surgery.

In some cases, observation, additional testing, lifestyle modifications, or medical management may be appropriate.

If surgery is recommended, we will discuss:

  • Why surgery may help
  • Risks and benefits
  • Timing
  • Recovery expectations
  • Surgical approach
  • Minimally invasive or robotic options when appropriate

Our goal is for you to leave understanding both the problem and the plan.

Common Questions Patients Ask

"Will I Need Surgery Right Away?"

Not necessarily.

Some conditions can safely be monitored, while others benefit from earlier intervention. Recommendations depend on your symptoms, imaging findings, overall health, and goals.

"How Long Will Recovery Take?"

Recovery varies depending on the procedure and the individual patient.

Many minimally invasive and robotic procedures allow patients to:

  • Go home the same day
  • Walk immediately after surgery
  • Return to light activities relatively quickly

We will discuss realistic expectations specific to your situation.

"Can I Get a Second Opinion?"

Absolutely.

Patients should feel confident and informed before moving forward with surgery. We welcome thoughtful questions and believe second opinions are an important part of patient-centered care.

Our Approach to Surgical Care

At Abbassi Surgical Associates, we focus on combining modern surgical techniques with personalized care and communication.

We understand that surgery can create anxiety for patients and families. Taking the time to educate, answer questions, and build trust is an important part of the process.

Preparing for Your Visit

Helpful things to bring include:

  • Insurance card and identification
  • Medication list
  • Prior imaging or reports
  • Imaging discs when available
  • A list of questions
  • A family member or friend if desired

Many patients find it helpful to write down questions beforehand so nothing important gets forgotten during the appointment.

When Should You Schedule a Surgical Consultation?

You may benefit from evaluation if you are experiencing:

  • Persistent abdominal pain
  • Hernia symptoms
  • Gallbladder attacks
  • Soft tissue masses or cysts
  • Recurrent diverticulitis
  • Hemorrhoids or anorectal symptoms
  • Skin or soft tissue infections
  • Symptoms your primary care physician or specialist believes may require surgical evaluation

Early evaluation can often provide reassurance, clarity, and a plan — even if surgery is not immediately needed.

Precision Surgery. Elevated Care.
